Internet Explorer 8 – What is a WebSlice?

Internet Explorer 8 – What is a WebSlice?

Once someone invented a technology known as RSS, it changed the way we look at Internet. We didn’t need to go to any site for an updated information, all the new web pages added to the current website were made available to us within a matter of seconds.

Now Microsoft comes up with something called a WebSlice. To understand it just think, what will you do if you have to constantly monitor a WebSlice (a part of a web page). Just understand that we can only utilize RSS in order to view a complete newly created web page, RSS as a technology can not deliver any part of a page with recent updates constantly. But with WebSlice we can constantly monitor a part or a slice of a web page directly from our Internet browser.

For example :- If you have to monitor stock price of XYZ corps with Yahoo Finance. You till now only have the option to open the web page of XYZ corps on yahoo finance and check its stock price. But with WebSlice, all you have to do is to add XYZ corps WebSlice to your favorite bar in your internet explorer, define an update schedule or use the default and that’s it. The stock price of XYZ corps will now keep changing at the scheduled time and after every new update your browser will flash your screen for a notice. Now you don’t need to open yahoo finance again and again for the checking the stock price.

The only disadvantage this technology could face is that, you can not add any WebSlice to your browser until the Website owner has implemented them. Say in the above eg. You would not be able to add the WebSlice for XYZ corps until yahoo finance has implemented it on their Web Server using a simple code.

Internet Explorer 8 - What is Accelerators?

Internet Explorer 8 – What is Accelerators ?

The Internet is changing. The feature called accelerator provided in Internet Explorer 8 is an amazing add-on people have ever seen. ‘Accelerators’ can be defined as an feature which is going to enhance and completely change the way people browse internet.

What is Accelerator?

How many times do you go to wikipedia to search for anything? How many times do you go to an online dictionary to find a meaning of a word? Every time you find some thing you note it down then go to google or any other website like wikipedia and then start searching for it. Just imagine if you don’t have to open any window or even you don’t have to note down any anything, what you have to do is to select the text in the internet explorer and hover your mouse over the accelerator button and that’s it. In the same window and even on the same page you will find your answer just take a look at an image below:-

Like the image above, which provides the information about maps on a single page of internet explorer , you can view many web services like this, using ‘accelerators’ feature shipped with Internet explorer 8. Even you can add or delete more accelerators with the Internet explorer 8 gallery.

Internet explorer 8 - Find on Page

Many times when you open wikipedia for some search term and keep finding that term in any article of 10,000 words, you find what a mess wikipedia is. But now whenever you try to find any term on any web page with Internet Explorer 8, what you have to do is to just press Ctrl F and that’s it. A beautiful search box will appear below your tab to help you finding that search term thought the page.

Even you wont have to write the complete term in the search box, when you will start typing IE will automatically find all matching words and highlight them. Lesser the keyboard hits lower the Microsoft keyboard sales. I bet Internet Explorer 9 will be a text version.

Internet Explorer 8 - Reopen last browsing session

With Internet explorer 8 users will also get and enhanced functionality (enhanced as defined by Microsoft and primitive as defined by mozilla) of restoring last session of browsing. This is an essential feature and at least it is included in this version of Microsoft Internet explorer. Otherwise closing and reopening the same windows again and again that too in IE was always a tough job, for users like us not for Microsoft – because they use mozilla firefox.

Internet Explorer 8 - Enhanced Tab Browsing

With the tab browsing feature quite new to Internet explorer, now Microsoft is giving Internet browsing a new color. As our traditional tab browsing shipped with Firefox , Chrome, etc its sometimes quite an head ache to maintain large number of tabs. People do forget from which tab the current tab is associated with.

Now Microsoft solves this problem in a colorful way. For eg. If I opened a new tab from an existing tab both these tabs will become a part of a group tab and will be given a specific color such as red, blue or something else, making it quite useful for the user to identify the tab relationship with other open tabs.

Internet Explorer 8 - Webslice Feature

Internet Explorer 8 includes a feature called web slice with this feature Microsoft has enhanced the users browsing experience with internet explorer to a great extent. With web slices there is not need for a person to keep on checking at ebay what the latest bid for an item is by constantly visiting the ebay website. All a user has to do is to include a Webslice of that item into Internet explorer 8 favorite item by clicking a 'green' icon which will appear on the item for which the web slice is available while browsing. It's RSS in a new Avatar.

Note: Please note that enabling web slice on server side is dependents completely on the website developers. They have to insert a small code in their website in order to enable it.
